Jachymov

Jachymov – a Czech town with a long history of mining.  The word dollar derives its name from a silver coin once minted in that town called a Sankt Joachimstal -> joachimstaler -> taler -> daler -> dollar  (from the Webster entry for dollar).

Some of the mines near that town were long known to cause reduced life expectancy among the miners and cancer, but the exact cause was not initially recognized.

Once the Communist Party came to power in 1968, they established work camps near this town to allow political enemies of the regime to spend their lives mining Uranium.  Marie Curie would use pitchblende from the Joachimstal mine to isolate radium.
